LexiParticipantSo I read on the forum blog on ‘what is moxibustion‘.
I don’t know too much on it but any clinic I’ve gone they’ve mainly practised indirect moxibustion and not too extensively tbh, whereas in daoist acupuncture I’ve read its a main form of treatment…why is this?
Also, what is the major difference between direct and indirect moxibustion apart from one touching the skin and can it be dangerous?

sultanKeymasterIndirect moxibustion is useful for warming the meridians but only with direct scarring moxibustion can you add energy enough to treat serious diseases.
I believe daoist acupuncture consists most of direct scarring moxibustion as its the most effective but generally unpopular in the west because it scars (and can be painful). There are certain cases though, where indirect moxibustion may be useful, for example if the patient is really weak, then it can work as a gradual introduction to direct moxa.
As with any medical treatment, if you know what you are doing, then it wont be dangerous.

Gabrielle1980ParticipantIt’s not popular because it can cause some scaring and looks crazy to western people. Even in modern day China they think that.
But before moxa was a main tool for acupuncture and needles were a supplement for it.
Moxa should be good quality for effective treatment, as poor quality moxa does not burn in the right frequency needed to cause change for healing purposes.

LexiParticipant@sultan , Oh I seeee, i’ve bought moxa sticks before and used them, is that the kind of warming effect you are talking about?
@gabrielle what distinguishes good quality moxa? Sorry I’m new to this so not sure where I can buy this if I wana try it.

Quie BianParticipant@Lexi, the best quality moxa usually comes from Korea, especially grown in a peninsula. It has a much darker colour, burns hotter and maintains its shape when burnt.
